Picking a User Name, or Alias

Postby Rick Blaine » Sun Oct 18, 2009 3:02 pm

In order to protect your real identity, all members should pick an Alias carefully.

Your initials, real name, firm name, or URL make it very easy for a troll to identify you. This can lead to heartache, stomach pain, financial loss, humiliation, and even ruin your career. AVOID USING YOUR REAL NAME, including initials, company or agency name, or URL.

As a rule, please do not pick an Alias here that you have used on other public forums. While the identity of Top Gun Producer forum members are protected (except for trolls), we cannot vouch for other online forums.

An Alias can be any combination of alpha-numeric characters (that means letters and numbers, for those who went to an inner city liberal indoctrination school), including spaces (there's no need for underscores). Aliases are case sensitive, but an alias that looks like this - CaSe SeNsItIvE - is prohibited.

AVOID the use of symbols: !!! or ??? in an Alias is unacceptable. Do not use any of the following: @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) - ; : ' " ? / > < , [ ] \ | } { = ` ~

Please use proper grammar. A period after an initial is okay. An ellipse is NOT.

Remember, other members will address you in writing on the forum, so an Alias that looks silly, sounds silly, is silly.

Certain words are unacceptable as an Alias. I will not list them here as they are generally accepted as offensive to the majority of people. If you try to use one as an Alias, you'll find out and you will likely be banished from entry. Please use good judgment.

If you are at a loss for an alias, consider using a character out of a movie that you respect, or another Noun, Adjective, or Adverb. Shorter is better than longer, but nothing less than THREE characters, not including spaces.

Examples of movie characters (already used):

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman
Harry Callahan
Rick Blaine
George Kaplan
Mike Damone
Seth Davis

A cartoon or comic book character is great. Or maybe your favorite mob boss, or author, or politician. Mononyms are acceptable, too.

Use your imagination! Be creative!

Just remember, an Alias is a nom de plume, or nom de guerre, or pen name, or pseudonym.

The purpose is to protect yourself from trolls, flamers, and evil doers. Please be careful.
Here's lookin' at you, kid!
